Challenging the Canyon: A Family Man Builds a Dam
by Beryl Gail Churchill
WSHS 2002 Publications Award
Nominated by the Park County Chapter
ISBN: 0965294269
Book Description:
Challenging the Canyon: A Family Man Builds A Dam brings a new dimension
to the oft-told story of the construction of the Shoshone Dam (Buffalo
Bill Dam) near Cody, Wyoming. While a great deal has been known of the
construction history of the concrete dam which was the tallest of its
time, only recently has the story of a family living at the construction
site been unearthed.
Author Beryl Churchill’s connection with the family of constructing
engineer D.W. Cole has brought to light a treasure trove of photographs,
letters and the details of life of the Cole family, who lived in the
Shoshone Canyon from 1905 to 1909, during most of the construction.
The book contains 51 never-published photographs, both of the Cole
family and the construction project. In addition, letters between
husband and wife, and between father and daughters reveal an
affectionate, intelligent family and shed new light on the daily life of
a turn-of-the-century family experiencing the American West firsthand.
