L. C. Bishop Award
L.C. Bishop, born at Fort Fetterman in 1885, became a county surveyor
and then an engineer, finally serving as Wyoming State Engineer from
1939 to 1957, when he retired. He was proud of Wyoming and served the state's needs
both as a government worker and as a volunteer. He was active in the study of Wyoming
history. Bishop was a charter member of the Wyoming State Historical
Society and in 1958 he served as the Executive Vice President of the
Wyoming Pony Express Centennial Board.

Bishop extensively mapped many of the state's emigrant trails and stage, express and freight roads. Wyoming State Archives is caretaker of several of Bishop's map series, including Ranch Maps, Site Maps, and Emigrant Trails Maps. The L.C. Bishop Award is made by the Wyoming State Historical Society to an organization or individual who has voluntarily contributed in a significant manner to preserving or recording the history of any part of a historical trail in Wyoming through preservation of a site, completed written research, cartography or other means. The contribution should span a number of years. Nomination shall be made by letter to the Awards Committee, stating the name and address of the nominee, the nature of the work done, and where. Only one award per year may be given. The award need not be given each year. A certificate and plaque will be presented at the Annual Meeting.
