ANNUAL TREK

Webster's dictionary defines a trek as a "journey," "to travel slowly," or "to make one's way arduously." An annual summer trek is sponsored by the Wyoming State Historical Society and chapters also sponsor treks. They're a great way to learn more about some of Wyoming's historic sites, and an opportunity to be in Wyoming's wonderful outdoors.

2010 ANNUAL TREK - June 17-20, 2010

Star Valley is made up of Afton, Alpine, Amesville, Auburn, Bedford, Etna, Fairview, Freedom, Glen, Grover, Jacknife, Forest Dell, Muddy String, Osmond, Smoot, Star Valley Ranch, Thayne, Tincup and Turnerville—all in Lincoln County, Wyoming.  As hosts of the 2010 WSHS Trek, the group is excited about the prospects of sharing the area history with participants.  The Trek is scheduled for June 17-20, 2010.  Registration is requested by May 20th.

In past years the Star Valley chapter has been instrumental in advancing the study of Star Valley, Wyoming.  They purchased the Old Rock Church in Auburn and now use it as a theatre, in fact, we’ll be attending a play there.  They were also instrumental in the moving and renovation of the Old LDS Church Seminary building to its new location on the Lincoln County Fairgrounds. The very active chapter also participated in the state of Wyoming’s “Barn Again” project and restored the old Wyoming State Experiment barn.

The area is known for its Intermittent Spring, one of Wyoming’s most awesome natural wonders.  It is the largest of only three fluctuating springs known in the world.  The Intermittent Spring was called “the spring that breathes” by Native Americans who were in the area before it was settled by Mormon pioneers.  Trek participants will tour the area and, of course, comfortable shoes are highly recommended. We’ll also be enjoying the history of the Lander Trail.  Built in 1858, the deliberately constructed trail was initially created for the purpose of moving troops to the Pacific Coast for protection of those areas.  The Lander cut-off left the Oregon Trail at South Pass before rejoining it in Idaho at Salt Springs. The area is rich in local history and many of the sites we will visit are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Registration is due May 20th and will be $75.00 per person.  In addition to the tours, the fee includes six meals and a ticket to the famous Bar J Wranglers Chuckwagon Supper and Western Show in Jackson.  The registration form can be found at www.wyshs or by e-mailing linda@dancewyoming.com.  It must be returned by May 20.  Please make your hotel accommodations early, and get your registration form in as soon as possible.

The WSHS Executive Committee will meet at 3:00 p.m. at the Afton Civic Center on June 17th, followed by dinner and a play.  Friday and Saturday are full tour days, ending with a breakfast farewell on Sunday.

This would be a good vacation weekend for people of all ages.  You do not have to be a member of the WSHS or the Star Valley Chapter to participate.  Everyone is welcome.  Please help us make this a huge success by attending and spreading the word among your family and friends.  Register by clicking on the registration form below.  Print and fill out the form.  Send the form with your payment to the address listed on the form.
