Lola Homsher Grant Program — 2016 Grant Recipients

Sylvia Bruner, chair of the Society’s Homsher Committee, announces that out of ten applications, four have been awarded for a total of $5,000.00. They are:

  • Andrew Gulliford of Durango, Colorado for “The Wooly West: Understanding the Cattle and Sheep Wars in Wyoming and Colorado. Andrew received $968.96.
  • Mary Murphy of Bozeman, Montana for “Gender, Culture and the Politics of Food on the Northern Bordlerands of North America 1960-1940. Mary received $1,500.00.
  • Jim Gatchell Memorial Museum in Buffalo for “Braehead Memories: The Making of a Wyoming Cowboy. The museum received $1059.04.
  • Danny Walker of Laramie for “Battle of Red Buttes and Military Records of Involved 11th Kansas Cavalry Soldiers. Danny received $1,472.00.

Sylvia noted that the applications were all good, and the committee was disappointed not to be able to fully fund each and every one. “We are trying to develop the process so that every applicant understands the criteria when applying for the funds. Additionally, she noted, funds for this particular project are far below what we would like to see in the future. Recipients who are not already members of the Society also receive a one-year complimentary membership, and are required to file a final report.

Members of the committee, including Sylvia, are Patty Kessler, Laramie; Tina Hill, Rawlins; and George Damone, Buffalo.

Applications and rules can be obtained by visiting the Society’s website at www.wyshs.org, and then by selecting “Homsher Endowment.” If you do not have access to the web, please contact the Wyoming State Historical Society at 307-322-3014 or linda@wyshs.org to receive a copy of the application. Electronic proposals are due February 28, 2017.
